Hmmm, I am not sure why it would stand up on the points. Count the stitches and make sure you have that right, and if so, it may be a guage issue. Some people use a smaller hook in the center rows and then switch to the correct hook later on. Could be your yarn type too -- let me know more about the yarn and hook you are using and send pics if you can - I would love to help you out.
